CHRIS BAGNALL

Chris Wedlock's room

The house was built as a police station in 1843. It is situated at a busy crossroads. The room described below was the policeman’s office but now serves as a living room.
It is a rectangle of 4mx3.5m with a height of 2.7m, two walls are internal and two external. All walls and ceiling are painted white. Skirting and picture rails going around the room are also white.
The south facing external wall has a centrally positioned 4 pane double glazed sash window which is painted white, the window sill starts at waist height and stops just below the ceiling, there is a radiator below the window. To the left of the window there is a small B&W print with a gold coloured frame and mount.
The west facing external wall has a centrally positioned window the same as the other window. To the left of the window there is a Tom Adams print of the cover illustration of ‘The Moving Finger’ by Agatha Christie. It has a black frame with a grey mount. In the corner, under the print, there is a Clavinova electric piano which always has music books open on its music stand and a pile of music on the top of the piano. There is an old piano stool in front of the piano.
Both windows have full height net curtains in the window reveals, and both have thick red coloured curtains to sill height hanging from black metal curtain poles just below the ceiling.
The north facing internal wall has a 1.5m chimney breast, it has a cube cut out at the lower level where a wood burning stove (dark grey box with a window) sits on a grey slate hearth, the surface of the cut out cube is painted red. Above the fire on the chimney breast is a 1m square painting which is mainly red with gold symbols (64 hexagrams from the book of changes). On each side of the chimney breast is an Ikea storage unit. Each has a low cupboard with two doors and two shelves above. The cupboards and shelves are in beech veneer with aluminum tube legs and sides. On the left hand cupboard there is a black radio come CD player on the lower shelf; on the top of the right hand cupboard there are some large books and a couple of family photos in frames on the lower shelf. The upper shelf on each unit is empty. Between the cupboard on the right and the fire is a small red child’s chair with a woven rush seat. On the left hand side between the fire and the cupboard is a small padded foot stool.
The east facing wall is also internal, there is a large (1.6m wide) arched opening and a door to the right. The door is an old 4 panel pine door with a brass door handle. The wide column between the arch and the door has a small picture in a glass and clip frame on a red backing sheet of a girl on a white horse. In front of the door is a free standing chrome up-light. The arched opening looks out into the hall where, to the left, there is a tall bookcase full of paperback books.
There is a 3 seater sofa which faces the fireplace and a large arm chair facing the arch. To the left of the arch is a small pouf. The sofa, chair and pouf are all covered in the same red fabric. The floor is made from strips of beech wood and there is a red rug with 4 light brown square shaped patterns on it. The rug is in the middle of the room in front of the sofa and arm chair, on the rug there are two small wooden coffee tables.
The ceiling is white and there is a centre pendant light-fitting with a white square paper lamp shade.
