Julie Slavin's room
The
Room
Longer
than wide – say, 20 x 14ft. Sandy yellow walls up to white picture
rail, white above.
Two
windows, main one in middle of end wall, approx 6ft square with wood
venetians, non-closing, non-matching curtains [right one white, left
leafy design on white].
Kellim
rugs randomly cover neutral carpet.
Two
big sofas, one about 3ft in front of main window, covered with
ochre/black ethnic throw + two brown fur cushions; other sofa in
middle of longer wall facing chimney, loud cushions [animal prints
etc] with sturdy coffee table in front, also covered with ethnic
velvet print, brown & cream wide stripey.
Wide
chimney breast [say, 9ft] with feature fireplace: heavy
black/red-veined marble surround & mantelpiece with small wood
burner on green tiled hearth. Terracotta urn thing [what d'you call
em?] on either side of wood burner. Elaborate carved mahogany
surrounding old oval mirror on mantelpiece dominates room. Two female
ceramic figures on left end of mantelpiece. Left of hearth is small
square [trolley] table with sound system, right of hearth is small
round table with TV, Picasso print above [line drawing on plain
paper].
Alcove
to left has low chest of drawers with CD shelving over, ornaments on
top shelf with tall African long-horned mask towards corner.
Right
alcove has long African textile hanging beside second window [wood
venetians, thin white curtains] in corner. Desk sideways to window
against wall, dark brown office swivel chair.
To
right of MAIN window is yucca plant with picture above. To left is
single bookshelf unit going into corner, with double bookshelf unit
at right-angle returning towards sofa opposite fireplace. Ornaments
on top of all three bookshelf units [6 shelves deep].
Above
that sofa is wide unframed oil painting [6 ft? X 2ft?]. At near end
of sofa is oblong coffee table with straggly plant, then log trolley
against wall.
The
rest of the room [end wall] from door to second window & desk is
out of view. There's an armchair covered by white woven rug with
rust-red cube footstool/beanbag in front, projecting from beside the
door.
What
a mish-mash! But a colourful & comfortable cosy room... I think.
GOOD LUCK!
